Magic has changed a lot. New sets come fast, Universes Beyond is everywhere, and older formats keep getting harder to get into.
That works for some people. For others, it’s just… not what they’re looking for.
Uncle Istvan is a simple alternative:
No Universes Beyond, a tighter card pool, and fewer “must-own” expensive staples.
Just a format that feels closer to how Magic used to play.
If you enjoy UB or current formats, that’s fine! This isn’t replacing anything. It’s just another way to play.
If you want something a bit slower, cleaner, and easier to jump into… you’re in the right place.
Early Magic had some extreme power outliers.
Starting at The Dark avoids most of them while keeping the overall feel of older Magic.
It also removes the need for cards like original dual lands to stay competitive.
Mana bases are still strong, just less dependent on a small set of expensive staples.
Premodern is great, but it solves a different problem.
It uses a fixed card pool (4th Edition to Scourge) and doesn’t change.
Uncle Istvan is not a closed format.
It starts at The Dark and includes all later sets, with Universes Beyond removed.
New in-universe cards can still enter the format.
In short:
Premodern is a snapshot of the past.
Uncle Istvan is a living format with a similar spirit, but open to new cards.
At least one copy of Uncle Istvan should be present at the table.
It does not need to be part of any deck, and it is not played during the game.
A single shared copy is enough.
